Covert Ottawa Weekly Update: Ottawa Events May 27th – June 2nd

Good Monday morning!! I hope you all had a great weekend and got to take advantage of a great Sunday! Last weekend was so busy with all kinds of events, and this week coming up is no different!! There are some fantastic events going on in each area of the city.

Let’s kick this post off with some festivals! First, The Happening is running all week in the Hintonburg neighbourhood. There are simply too many events to list them all so check out their website to get all the details. The ever popular, Latin Sparks Festival runs from Thursday to Sunday with a variety of activities for all tastes. It looks like a fantastic line up so check that out for sure!! Friday to Sunday, the Manotick BIA is hosting it’s annual Dickinson Days with plenty of activities for everyone. On Saturday, the City of OM Festival runs all day at TD Place with a huge line up of yoga instructors and creative yoga classes. On Saturday and Sunday, Ottawa Veg fest is running at the RA Centre. Finally, for festivals and larger events, Doors Open Ottawa is running all weekend with locations all over the city so check out their site for a full listing of locations and times.

For theatre this week, there are lots of options. Mending Fences has their preview night on Tuesday and then runs all week at Ottawa Little Theatre. At The Gladstone Theatre, the hilarious Nell Gwynn by Jessica Swale kicks off Wednesday for a two week run. Pinocchio is playing at the NAC from Wednesday to Saturday and Opheus’ latest production of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert starts on Friday and runs until June 9th at Meridian Theatres @ Centrepointe.

There are a lot of sports in Ottawa this week. The Ottawa Champions have a three-game series starting Tuesday vs. the Rockland Boulders and then another right after vs the Trois-Rivieres Aigles. The Ottawa Fury have a match on Sunday vs the Charlotte Independence. And I’m excited to announce that our Rrrrrredblacks have their first pre-season game on Saturday afternoon against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats!

We’ve got a few live events this week too. No huge touring concerts to mention, but Daniel O’Donnell can be seen at the NAC on Friday night. Also on Friday, you can take in “A Conversation with Barack Obama” at the Canadian Tire Centre. Then at the CTC, with less than 24 hours to change over the stadium, Monster Trucks take over for a show on Saturday night.

A full list of this week’s events can be found here!!

 Where will I be?

It’s another crazy busy week around town, so I’m really not sure where I’ll end up for the most part just yet, but I do have a few confirmed plans. On Thursday night, I’ll be at The Gladstone Theatre to see Nell Gwynn. Friday, I’ve been invited to attend a sponsor and stakeholders appreciation luncheon for the Ottawa New Years Eve ball (the best NYE party each year in the city) and then Friday night I’ll be back at Meridian Theatres @ Centrepointe to see Priscilla. Sunday, I’ll be once again taking in the monthly card and comic show at the Jim Durrell Centre.

The annual CCLA/CGTC (Carleton County Law Association/Great Canadian Theatre Company) Lawyer Play has a cast composed of lawyers, law students, paralegals, judges and magistrates. It is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2019, thanks to the ongoing and generous support of sponsors and theatre enthusiasts. This year’s play – War of Two Worlds – is written especially for the Lawyer Play by GCTC’s own Eric Coates and Hugh Neilson, and will be presented June 5-8, 2019. The 2019 charity partner is St. Mary’s Home, a not-for-profit charitable organization serving the Ottawa area and beyond since 1933. St. Mary’s Home provides specialized residential and community support services to marginalized young pregnant women (ages 13-25), young parents, and their children. They have special catering for every gala night in addition to wine, beer and whiskey samplings as well as complementary beer and wine during intermission and post-show appetizers, which will make it a fun evening theatre people won’t soon forget while helping raise funds for a good cause. To buy tickets: Please support a Covert Ottawa Guy supporter and select “Elsa” in the dropdown menu when asked “who did you buy your tickets from?”

I went to two plays last week and have posted reviews for both. First, Thief Society was on at the Gladstone Theatre, and second, Seussical at Meridian Theatres at Centrepoint.
