Covert Ottawa Weekly Newsletter: Oops I Missed Last Week Edition

Happy Victoria Day everyone! Normally we celebrate this long weekend with fireworks while enjoying the extra day off work, but so many of us would love to be working today if given the option. That opportunity is coming soon as the Ontario rules get loosened and many people return to the workplace…just in a different way. This past weekend, most notably, saw golf courses re-open, and wow, they were full! Even the driving ranges were packed!! It’s nice to see a little bit of normalcy returning to life, but at the same time, a bit scary seeing new cases still popping up every day. Where is the happy medium?

You may have noticed that I didn’t have a post last week. I was simply overwhelmed with things, and couldn’t get it out on time, so I gave myself a little break and took a holiday (at least that’s what I tell myself). This week is back to normal though, with some updates and stories.

Tiger King

Let’s start with some old news. I think we’re all tired of Tiger King and tired of hearing about it. Well, consider this lack of TV coverage only a break, as a new made for TV fictional version of Tiger King is underway! Although many of us want to see Joe Exotic played by David Spade (Joe Dirt), we’ll have to settle for Nicholas Cage!! I can’t decide if that will be incredible or ridiculous! Can it be both? Only time will tell, so stay tuned for that to be released.

Murder Hornets

This is another subject that I saved from my missed newsletter last week, but seriously….”murder hornets?” Who names these things? They are pretty creepy looking little creatures! At least they’re not locusts. I do think people and the media are being a little overly dramatic about them, but hey….they need something new to scare people with, right?

Sports Return

As the rules loosen, we are starting to see the return of professional sports. In Europe (Germany), professional football kicked off this weekend, and despite having no fans in the stadium, the games looked just as exciting! UFC had another fight this weekend, NASCAR had a race that featured 40 cars turning left for three hours, and finally, on a more thrilling topic, professional golf is back. Sports fans once again are getting something to cheer for that isn’t marbles rolling down a hill or turtles crawling along towards a finish line.

The NFL has announced that their season will start in September with a full 17 week schedule. Here’s the official notice:

“The NFL announced today its 17-week, 256-game regular-season schedule for 2020, which kicks off on Thursday night, September 10, in Kansas City and concludes with 16 division games on Sunday, January 3. “The release of the NFL schedule is something our fans eagerly anticipate every year, as they look forward with hope and optimism to the season ahead,” said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. “In preparing to play the season as scheduled, we will continue to make our decisions based on the latest medical and public health advice, in compliance with government regulations, and with appropriate safety protocols to protect the health of our fans, players, club and league personnel, and our communities. We will be prepared to make adjustments as necessary, as we have during this off-season in safely and efficiently conducting key activities such as free agency, the virtual off-season program, and the 2020 NFL Draft.” The NFL’s 101st season begins with the league’s annual primetime kickoff game, as the defending Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs host the Houston Texans at Arrowhead Stadium on September 10 (8:20 PM ET, NBC) in a rematch of the AFC Divisional playoffs.”

The Masked Singer

Is anyone else watching this show? I feel like my competitive sports side is getting far too involved in this prime-time train wreck. Who thinks of this garbage?? But man, I can’t wait until Wednesday night’s finale to find out who Frog, Turtle and Night Angel really are!! My money is on Frog to take it all! Sorry to see Rhino go last week, but at least we’re down the country singer now. No reveal spoilers from me here though.

I’m really working to find more concerts to entertain us online. I’ve added several this week to the events calendar. So for you music fans, this week offers: Joe Satriani, Metallica, Yellow Claw, Steve Earle, Dolly Parton, Michael Buble, Hawksley Workman, Broken Social Scene, Plain White T’s, Tara Shannon and Michael Franti…at least that’s what I’ve found so far.

As a reminder, I’ve created the option on the events calendar to show JUST the virtual events to help manage your boredom. It also removes all the cancelled and postponed events to reduce sadness. As an example, this coming weekend was ideal for foodies. Originally, Kanata Ribfest, Barrhaven BBQ festival and Burger Festival were all planned for the same weekend. That sounds like the greatest heart attack ever!!

Canadian Tulip Festival

The Tulip Festival has kicked off online this year!

“Join us online for The Canadian Tulip Festival’s 2020 programming!

Celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Liberation of the Netherlands, our website provides you with an opportunity to trace the path of liberation, and learn about the incredible sacrifices made by Canadians.

With online exhibits from the Juno Beach Centre and the Canadian Research and Mapping Association, such as Maple Leaves and Tulips, Project ‘44: The Road to Liberation, and the Towns of Liberation, experience an interactive and comprehensive look at the role Canadians played in the Dutch liberation, and why our cross-Atlantic friendship with the Netherlands has continued for seven and a half decades!

That’s not all, you also have the chance to participate in interactive programming including children’s colouring pages, our Victory Parade Photo Recreation Challenge and so much more!”

As a final note for those of you who are getting sick of hiding from the world, for those of you who find themselves lashing out at others for no reason, and for those of you who are compounding an already difficult unavoidable situation with intolerance…..just take the advice of a great man….”Let it go”
