DESCRIPTION:A collaboration between the Downtown BIA and the Ottawa Music Industry Coalition (OMIC) is bringing local music to The Shed on Sparks Street  all summer long! SUMMARY:Ihsane: Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève + Eastman
DESCRIPTION:For the creation of Ihsane\, Moroccan-Belgian choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui immersed himself in the Moroccan legacy of his father\, in a personal search for identity and connectedness. The bodies of the dancers\, fluid and powerful\, embody both the search for self and the universality of human bonds. \nTransposing the dreams and memories of the choreographer’s childhood in Tangiers\, the stage is bathed in subdued light. Labyrinthine and voluptuous set design\, dancers in Berber-inspired voluminous costumes\, and the rich sonic textures of live music by Tunisian musician Jasser Haj Youssef and Lebanese singer Fadia Tomb El-Hage\, evoke a contemporary Morocco between past and present. \nIn Arabic\, Ihsane means to do good and instill beauty. In Islam\, it refers to a form of communion with the universe. These multiple readings infuse the inspiration for Ihsane\, a work that embraces the spectator from the very first scene. \nDid you know?  \nIn this large-scale production\, 16 dancers from Le Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève are joined on stage by 4 musicians\, 2 singers and 3 from Sidi Larbi’s own company Eastman. \nWith Ihsane\, NAC Dance has presented 12 works by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui since 2003. \nInteresting fact\nCostumes are by celebrated Moroccan fashion designer Amine Bendriouich\, who elevates traditional forms of Berber clothing beyond norms and gender.

The evening will feature electrifying live performances by Tanzanian Singeli pioneers Sisso & Maiko alongside genre-defying French-Cameroonian artist Violence Gratuite. \nFounded as a club night in Kampala\, Uganda\, Nyege Nyege began with a mission to create a safe\, supportive space where East African DJs\, musicians\, and artists could take creative risks\, share ideas\, and build community. This foundation grew into a dynamic cultural platform that includes a festival\, a professional recording studio and residency program\, and two record labels—Nyege Nyege Tapes and Hakuna Kulala—dedicated to nurturing the underground music scene. With its own booking agency and relentless innovation\, Nyege Nyege continues to champion a new generation of boundary-pushing creatives. \nOn the night\, audiences will be immersed in the headlong rush of Sisso & Maiko’s Singeli—Tanzania’s breakneck dance music that layers frenetic loops with influences from Zanzibar’s taarab to South African afro-house\, propelled by razor-sharp MCing that reflects the joys and struggles of urban life in Dar es Salaam. Alongside this\, Violence Gratuite (aka Violaine Morgan Le Fur) will perform selections from her debut album Baleine à Boss\, a suite of pulsing techno and fractured trap infused with echoes of French pop. Rooted in imagery from the forests of western Cameroon and shaped by a restless\, exploratory spirit\, the record conjures a sonic world equally at home in the club or at a Breton fest noz. \nPresented in partnership with Arts in the Margins\, Montréal; Debaser\, Ottawa; send + receive festival\, Winnipeg; Strangewaves\, Hamilton; The Music Gallery\, Toronto; and Western Front\, Vancouver\, with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts\, the Government of Canada\, and SOCAN Foundation.
