DESCRIPTION:Jesus Christ Superstar tells the story of biblical Jesus in the final days leading up to his crucifixion. A rock opera\, the musical has no spoken dialogue. Superstar focuses on the personal conflicts between Jesus\, his disciples\, the people of Israel\, and the leadership of Rome. Special attention is played to the relationship between Judas Iscariot and Jesus\, as well as Jesus’ relationship with Mary Magdalene. \nThe musical is unique in that it focuses on both Judas’ struggle making the decision to betray Jesus and Jesus’ human psychology\, fear\, and anger in understanding and accepting his role as both leader and martyr. \nThe show is a product of its era\, permeated with 1970’s rock\, gospel\, folk and funk themes\, modern language and colloquialisms\, and high-energy dance numbers.

DESCRIPTION:The members of Les Violons du Roy and Music Director Jonathan Cohen bring their boundless energy and unparalleled performance style to Southam Hall for a program spanning three centuries of music. \nOne of literature’s most beloved figures\, Don Quixote\, takes center stage in two works. Telemann’s Burlesque de Quixotte traces the fabled knight’s adventures with sidekick Sancho Panza and his longing for Princess Dulcinea. At the same time\, Aulis Sallinen’s The Nocturnal Dances of Don Juan Quixote merges Quixote’s world with that of the libertine Don Juan in a thrilling concerto for cello and orchestra performed by Johannes Moser\, “one of the finest of young virtuoso cellists” (Gramophone). \nJohannes Moser will also bring his signature flair to C.P.E. Bach’s Third Cello Concerto\, a work of charming lyricism and exuberant dances\, and Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 11 closes the evening with some of the composer’s most intimate and beautiful music\, reimagined in Gustav Mahler’s arrangement for string orchestra.
