DESCRIPTION:The Stranger is the fifth studio album by American singer-songwriter Billy Joel\, released on September 29\, 1977\, by Columbia Records. It was the first of Joel’s albums to be produced by Phil Ramone\, with whom he would work for five subsequent albums. \nJoel’s previous album\, Turnstiles (1976)\, had sold modestly\, and peaked at only #122 on the US Billboard 200 charts\, prompting Columbia to consider dropping him if his next release sold poorly. Joel wanted the new album to feature his touring band\, formed during the production of Turnstiles. The band consisted of drummer Liberty DeVitto\, bassist Doug Stegmeyer\, and multi-instrumentalist Richie Cannata\, who played the saxophone and organ. Spending six weeks at No. 2 on the US Billboard 200 chart\, The Stranger was Joel’s critical and commercial breakthrough.

Don’t miss your chance to hear Ottawa native Kerson Leong bring his “spontaneity and mastery\, elegance and fantasy” (Le Monde) to this iconic work. \nBookending the evening are two symphonies teeming with the charm and elegance of the Classical era. Beethoven’s First Symphony shows the German composer breaking the boundaries of rhythm\, harmony\, and humour at the end of the 18th century\, while Britten’s Simple Symphony makes the heart race with four playful dances composed in the style of Beethoven and Mozart.

SUMMARY:Allison Russell
DESCRIPTION:Montreal-born and Nashville-based\, Allison Russell is a Grammy\, Juno\, Americana and Folk Awards-winning artist\, actor\, author\, songwriter\, producer\, human rights advocate\, survivor and mother. She is the co-founder of Once and Future Sounds and Love Rising. Her debut solo album\, Outside Child\, was released in 2021\, followed by The Returner in 2023 via Concord/Fantasy Records. \nPrior to her solo career\, she co-founded\, recorded and toured internationally with the bands Po’Girl\, Birds of Chicago\, and Our Native Daughters. She is a member of Joni Mitchell’s Joni Jam band. \nRussell’s ensemble\, the Rainbow Coalition\, opened for Hozier’s Unreal Unearth tour throughout 2024. Their All Returners headlining tour will continue in the spring of 2025 in Australia and North America. Allison made her Broadway debut starring as Persephone in Anais Mitchell’s Hadestown from November 2024 to February 2025.

DESCRIPTION:For Christopher Stowell’s first programmed season as RWB’s new artistic director\, he brings us this glorious ode to Stravinsky\, the quintessential ballet composer of the 20th century. \nIn this special evening\, Stravinsky’s compositions will be brought to life on stage in two one-act ballets: Firebird\, composed in 1910 for Diaghilev’s Les Ballets Russes\, and The Fairy’s Kiss\, composed in 1928 for Les Ballets de Madame Ida Rubinstein. Often described as revolutionary\, Stravinsky’s work is difficult to characterize given his chameleon-like ability to constantly change his musical style. From percussive and folkloric\, to precise\, concise and witty\, the rhythmic vitality of his music has cemented him as one of the most beloved composers for dance. \nIn the spirit of revolutionary artistic endeavours\, the RWB has commissioned a new Firebird created by award-wining choreographer on the rise Chicagoan Houston Thomas. And\, the extraordinary Alexei Ratmansky is the creative force behind The Fairy’s Kiss\, conceived as an allegory about the seductive power of an artist’s muse\, originally commissioned by Miami City Ballet in 2017.
