DESCRIPTION:Hijinks on deck!\nThe theatre stage is transformed into a skatepark\, a multifaceted setting where freedom expresses itself through tricks of the parkour\, choreographic flow\, and countercultural high jinks. In this ode to the nostalgia of her youth\, Danish choreographer Mette Ingvartsen explores the speed\, power\, and energy of movement on wheels\, and the music celebrating skater culture’s inclusivity. SKATEPARK’s punks are out for a good time\, with no shortage of gravity-testing jumps and tricks\, parabolas\, and ‘eights’. \nMette Ingvartsen approaches choreography as a “permeable” practice\, one that is fluid\, porous and open to the world. In her research\, she homed in on reframing the smaller movements that surround the practice of skateboarding to define her choreographic language\, and created the work through knowledge sharing in close connection with the skater community in Brussels where she is based. \nOn stage\, a motley crew of Ottawa’s local skaters join with professional dancers\, skateboarders and roller skaters from across generations in a shared space where perseverance\, experimentation and healthy rivalry contribute to a unique sense of community. \nDid you know?\nWhen skateboarding took off in the early to mid 1960s\, Canada adopted the term “skurfboard” to refer to an 18-inch board with roller skate wheels.\nThere are 195 skateparks in Canada\, with 45% of them in British Columbia (source: skatepark.ca 2019). \nFun Fact\nThe prelude to SKATEPARK will be performed by members of Ottawa’s skate community. It brings us into the cloistered 19th-century world of two loving\, devout Lutheran sisters and tells us how they and their fractured community reluctantly\, then completely\, embrace Babette\, a mysterious French refugee. But when Babette\, much to the community’s shock\, sacrifices all she has to throw a lavish dinner party\, the dinner guests magically and inexplicably experience radical\, infinite grace. Babette’s sumptuous feast is more than a meal: it is an act of supreme artistry that invites an abundant experience of forgiveness and transforms the entire community. Through Babette’s Feast\, we learn how embracing the stranger can change a community for the better. The creators dedicate the play to strangers in foreign lands\, for their courage and their gifts.

With a profound sense of mystery and nostalgia\, Shostakovich quotes his earlier symphonies and works that inspired him over the years—including Wagner’s Ring cycle and Rossini’s William Tell Overture—before sending his final symphony into the great beyond with the ghostly sound of distant drums. \nLike Shostakovich\, Caroline Shaw references composers close to her heart in The Observatory\, a symphonic poem in which the Pulitzer Prize-winning composer meditates on life\, death\, and the vast expanse of the universe.

It brings us into the cloistered 19th-century world of two loving\, devout Lutheran sisters and tells us how they and their fractured community reluctantly\, then completely\, embrace Babette\, a mysterious French refugee. But when Babette\, much to the community’s shock\, sacrifices all she has to throw a lavish dinner party\, the dinner guests magically and inexplicably experience radical\, infinite grace. Babette’s sumptuous feast is more than a meal: it is an act of supreme artistry that invites an abundant experience of forgiveness and transforms the entire community. Through Babette’s Feast\, we learn how embracing the stranger can change a community for the better. The creators dedicate the play to strangers in foreign lands\, for their courage and their gifts.
