SUMMARY:Beverly Glenn-Copeland & Elizabeth Copeland
DESCRIPTION:For the first time in Ottawa\, Debaser is thrilled to present a concert by Beverly Glenn-Copeland and Elizabeth Copeland on Friday\, December 5\, 2025 at the Bronson Centre. Opening the show will be singer-songwriter Izzy Rose. \nThe eclectic works of Beverly Glenn-Copeland and Elizabeth Copeland root deeply into the interconnectedness of human beings. Glenn; the Philadelphia-born singer\, songwriter and composer\, and Elizabeth; the Canadian-born author\, theatre artist and educator have been creative collaborators for more than four decades. Drawing a myriad of musical practices toward a single\, luminous conviction: that music can shake us loose from the disconnect that closes us off from one another. Their multifaceted body of work surrenders to the beauty\, pain and great capacity for healing that courses through life in all its forms. In its unguarded sincerity\, their work invites you to share in its courage. To imagine a new world of community and connection. \nGlenn’s latest album\, The One Ahead — his first collection of new music in nearly two decades — deepens these explorations\, casting searching light into how all of us must dissolve the harms of this world and carry each other forward into the next. It has a funky\, energetic sound. There are songs about love\, past and present: “Prince Caspian’s Dream” revisits a love from half a century ago\, and “Harbour” expresses Glenn’s gratitude to Elizabeth for the care that sustains him. It’s another high point in a career that has defied categorisation and included collaborations with world-renown artists like Bon Iver and Sam Smith. \nElizabeth’s creative works have evolved at the intersection of arts and activism. Her early years saw her touring with Second City\, and performing as the ‘Witch’ in Hansel and Gretl with the Honolulu Symphony. Her seminal book\, Jazz: Nature’s Improvisation was shortlisted for a ReLit Award\, and her book of eco-poetry\, Daring to Hope at the Cliff’s Edge evolved out of a year-long residency at the Joggins Fossil Institute: a UNESCO world heritage site on the mighty Bay of Fundy. \nTogether\, in this new interactive and heartwarming performance Glenn and Elizabeth invite us into their extraordinary artistic landscape through an evening of song\, community and shared joy. Where the music reminds us of our collective power and strength\, and gives us nourishment to carry on\, together.

SUMMARY:Sisso & Maiko\, Violence Gratuite\, NLANDU x WALLXCE
DESCRIPTION:Debaser is pleased to present a showcase of innovative music from the internationally celebrated Nyege Nyege Tapes label\, as part of a cross-Canada tour. The evening will feature electrifying live performances by Tanzanian Singeli pioneers Sisso & Maiko alongside genre-defying French-Cameroonian artist Violence Gratuite. \nFounded as a club night in Kampala\, Uganda\, Nyege Nyege began with a mission to create a safe\, supportive space where East African DJs\, musicians\, and artists could take creative risks\, share ideas\, and build community. This foundation grew into a dynamic cultural platform that includes a festival\, a professional recording studio and residency program\, and two record labels—Nyege Nyege Tapes and Hakuna Kulala—dedicated to nurturing the underground music scene. With its own booking agency and relentless innovation\, Nyege Nyege continues to champion a new generation of boundary-pushing creatives. \nOn the night\, audiences will be immersed in the headlong rush of Sisso & Maiko’s Singeli—Tanzania’s breakneck dance music that layers frenetic loops with influences from Zanzibar’s taarab to South African afro-house\, propelled by razor-sharp MCing that reflects the joys and struggles of urban life in Dar es Salaam. Alongside this\, Violence Gratuite (aka Violaine Morgan Le Fur) will perform selections from her debut album Baleine à Boss\, a suite of pulsing techno and fractured trap infused with echoes of French pop. Rooted in imagery from the forests of western Cameroon and shaped by a restless\, exploratory spirit\, the record conjures a sonic world equally at home in the club or at a Breton fest noz. \nPresented in partnership with Arts in the Margins\, Montréal; Debaser\, Ottawa; send + receive festival\, Winnipeg; Strangewaves\, Hamilton; The Music Gallery\, Toronto; and Western Front\, Vancouver\, with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts\, the Government of Canada\, and SOCAN Foundation.
